How to Get a Human Being on the Phone at Customer Service

By David Sarokin, eHow Member

How many times must I punch in my account number and home telephone number before FINALLY getting a real customer service human being on the phone, who immediately asks me for my account and phone number!?!? Next time you call customer service, technical assistance, or a help desk, here's the fast track shortcut for getting a real person on the phone to talk to.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step 1
Head to gethuman.com. GetHuman is a terrific site for, er, getting humans on the phone. It lists not only the phone numbers to call, but the process to follow to bypass recorded messages and answering machine prompts, and get a person on the line as quickly as possible.

Step 2
Select the category of interest to you. GetHuman.com includes thousands of listings in categories like INTERNET (e.g., amazon.com, Google Adwords, NetFlix, PayPal), TRAVEL (American Airlines, Disneyland, Expedia), MOBILE PHONES (Verizon, Motorola, T-Mobile) and many others.

Step 3

To Get a Human Follow the simple instructions. GetHuman provides the toll-free phone number to call and instructions like "Press pound sign at each prompt" or "Press 1; hold through message" or "Don't Press or say anything". These work, and before you know it, a real live person is on the line, helping you out.

Step 4
You can also visit GetHuman2.com, for a more sophisticated user interface for getting to talk to a real human being next time you need customer assistance.

Step 5
See Resources, directly below, for links.

Tips & Warnings

  • GetHuman listings cover companies in the US, UK and Canada.
