How to Keep a Computer From Overheating

A common problem many computer users face is when their machines overheat. When this occurs, your computer runs slower (especially your Internet connection) and your computer may even crash and shut down from time to time. Preventing this problem can prolong the life of your computer and save you money that you would have to spend on repairs or new parts. Here are a few simple things you can do to keep a computer from overheating.

Difficulty: Easy

Step 1
Use your computer in a cool room. This is probably the easiest thing you can do to keep a computer from overheating. During the summer, keep your computer in a room that is air conditioned, or whichever room is the coolest in your home. During the winter months, make sure that your computer is not close to a heater or a vent.

Step 2
Make sure the vents for your computer are not blocked. Dust will often accumulate around the vents, blocking hot air from exiting. Check for this problem once a week. It's a good idea to pull your computer a few feet away from a wall shelf. This makes sure that there is enough room for hot air to exit through the vents of your computer.

Step 3
Know your computer's limits when it comes to running programs. Many times, video files or games can overwork your computer, leading it to overheat. You will be able to tell that your computer is working too hard by the sounds you hear. If you hear your fans working harder than normal, close at least one of the applications that are running.

Step 4
Give your computer a rest from time to time. A good rule of thumb is to use your computer for no more than 1 consecutive hour. After this hour, put your computer into rest mode for 10 to 15 minutes. You should also put your computer in rest or sleep mode when you know you won't be using it for awhile, such as when you go to sleep at night.
