I discovered a neat trick tonight. 
In the last couple of days I downloaded a bunch of scrap sets that were saved as multi layer psp files.It took for ever to separate the various layers into individual graphics.
I found a short cut.

1)  open the graphic in Animation Shop
2)  Select all frames
3)  Save Frames as
4)  A pop up box will let you choose what format you want the files to be saved as
(for scrapping png works best) and where to save them.

Thats it.
Every layer is saved as a separate image.It takes seconds and works great.
The only catch is you may want to rename the images as this option saves them as numbered files.
